There is always a lot going on around the Sciliar! - several events provide fun and entertainment for the whole family in summer and winter

The festival of Oswald von Wolkenstein, a riding tournament

This is a spectacular medieval tournament in honor of the great minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein; he used to be one of the owners of the castle ruin Hauenstein in Seis.  35 teams fight to get the trophy every year. The Oswald von Wolkenstein ride happens in the beginning of June and consists of four riding tournaments, in the 4 localities in the Schlern region.

The “KastelrutherSpatzen” - the country music band of the Sciliar

This band is extremely famous in Europe and their singer, Norbert Rier, is from Kastelruth.

Kastelruther Spatzen

Three times a year the “Kastelruther Spatzen” invite their fans for concerts in their home town. The Open Air in June, the “Kastelruther Spatzen”-Festival in October and the Christmas Concert are fixed dates in the calendar. At those times all friends of the folk music and, of course, the fans of the group around Norbert Rier have the possibility to experience their stars live.

Siusi has the Summer Classics

There's a special classical event in Siusi (distant 3 km): Italian artists with international experiences play operas of the most famous composers. The "Summer Classics" at Siusi, because of their high level, have already become a fix part of the summer events of Siusi allo Sciliar.

Sciliar International Music Festival

Schlern International Music FestivalThe Schlern International Music Festival is a premier classical music festival that is set apart from other summer programs by its unique combination of studying with some of the finest musicians and the intense concert schedule which prepares students for the life of professional musician.

Internationally renowned musicians come to Fiè allo Sciliar (2,5 km away) to make music together and share their professional experience with students from all over the world. The results of their collaboration will be presented to the public: within the framework of over 30 concerts in churches, chapels and other historically interesting locations in Castelrotto, Siusi, Fiè, Tires, on the Alpe di Siusi and at Prösels Castle.

Swing on Snow

Eight days of music on the ski slopes and in the huts on the Alpe di Siusi (10 km) and in the villages at the foot of the Sciliar mountain, sweet melodies and dynamic rhythms, groups from the entire Alpine region, and above all a great atmosphere. For the tenth year in a row the Alpe di Siusi WinterMusicFestival offers a mix of traditional folk music with jazz, soul, pop and classical music.

The bands play on the various ski slopes on the Alpe di Siusi in the morning, at lunchtime they perform in the mountain huts of the Alpe di Siusi and in the evening the villages of Castelrotto, Siusi, Fiè and Tires host atmospheric after ski concerts. During the WinterMusicFestvial in january/february musical enjoyment combines perfectly with skiing.

A traditional farmer’s wedding in Castelrotto

This event shows the old traditions and traditional dresses of an alpine farmer’s wedding; on top of that there is also a traditional wedding meal. The members of this wedding, all dressed strictly in original costumes, start in St. Valentin (distant 3 km)and goes on to Castelrotto. In Castelrotto there is a real show where you can see the really beautiful dresses and accessories. A guide explains all the dresses and their origin; after that the innkeeper invites to the wedding meal. All this you can see every year in January.

Moonlights Classics SeiserAlm – Alpe di Siusi South Tyrol (distant 10 km)

This is actually a skiing marathon; hundreds or skiers start at 8 o’clock in the evening in Compatsch and run through the night; their only light is a small lamp on their head.

Cross-country race Moonlight Classic
When the snow glistens in the moonlight and torches light the circular cross-country slopes with start and finish in Compaccio, it’s Moonlight Classic Time on the Alpe di Siusi in the Dolomites. The fascination of the cross-country contest by night is unbroken – since its beginnings in the year 2007. South Tyrol Moonlight Classic Alpe di Siusi has it all: sports competition by night, trial of strength on international level and sports fun on Europe’s largest alpine pasture in the heart of the Dolomites. The participants can choose between the 15km and the 30km track. Both tracks are to be run exclusively in the classical diagonal stride technique.

The starting signal is given at 8 pm but even before the cross-country race starts, the start finish area is full of spectators: cross-country veterans impress with their ski show and there will be a fire show. At the start of the Moonlight Classic, altogether, cheer for the athletes who sweep out into the glittering winter landscape. At approx. 10 pm. the winner is expected in Compaccio. And when the winner of the South Tyrol Moonlight Classic Alpe di Siusi is determined, the party goes on with traditional food and music.

Traditional Christmas in Castelrotto

There is a Christmas market in the centre of Castelrotto, distant only 4 km; farmers and innkeepers do their best to offer typical food and drinks, handmade toys and tools and other very particular and traditional Christmas decorations and, of course, homemade cookies. The market is open every weekend in December.
